NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL ART

Thursday 16th December - Saturday 15th January

This was a collaboration between two North East-based artist-led projects, System Gallery and Spaghetti Factory. Artists at all stages of working, were invited to display artwork. There was no selection process and we supported as many artists as we could to exhibit their work.

Art and culture should be the common property of everyone, and so the opportunity to shape it should be treated as a fundamental human right. The galleries which house it should present themselves as public, democratic spaces.

This was not an ‘open call’; it was an ‘open invitation’. We were excited to see the exhibition transform from an empty white box to a shifting gathering of artworks, ideas and processes.

Exhibiting artists were:

System is a nomadic curatorial project active in the North East. Run by Dan Goodman and Susannah Curran, it serves as a platform for emerging contemporary artists. System provides an opportunity to develop, test and investigate concepts in a low stakes collaborative environment.

The Spaghetti Factory is a grassroots curatorial project, led by Eve Cromwell and Jenny Mc Namara. With a focus on experimental approaches to space, the project is driven by artist support networks. Spaghetti Factory originally started in a house in Central Newcastle in April 2018, as a series of eight solo show exhibitions. It has now expanded across the North East to include guest curation, workshops and collaborative programming.
